If either U.S. Senators Joe Biden or John Kerry is Barack Obama's choice for a running mate, it will be the first time in history that a party's vice presidential candidate was also running in a primary for an unrelated office.
Democratic vice presidential nominee Joseph Lieberman simultaneously ran to keep his Connecticut U.S. Senate seat or move to the Naval Observatory on the same day in 2000, but he had already secured his party's nomination by the time he was tapped by Al Gore. And Lloyd Bentsen won his Texas Senate primary in March before running with Michael Dukakis later in 1988.
Biden is unopposed in Delaware's Sept. 9 primary, while Kerry actually faces an opponent, Ed O'Reilly, on Sept. 16.
