Romney bet against his own VP chances

U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Former Gov. Mitt Romney (R): Getty ImageBLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- A lot of people talked about Mitt Romney filling out the Republican ticket this year, but, according to a former campaign adviser, Romney was actually betting against himself.

Ron Kaufman, a close friend of Romney's who worked on his aborted presidential campaign, said there was a bet between the two of them over Romney's chances of getting tapped as John McCain's vice presidential nominee.

Kaufman bet the former governor would be on the ticket. Romney said he wouldn't make it.

With Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska prepared to accept the nomination here this week, Kaufman said he is donating his stake to two charity events Romney is attending during the Republican National Convention.

The beneficiaries of the wager will be U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) and Erik Paulsen, who is running in Minnesota's 3rd Congressional District.

Romney

This just shows me that Romney is more realistic than I thought he would be.

What this shows is that

What this shows is that Romney's view is not only realistic, but he grasps the bigger picture. He is an honorable man that will do his duty as he sees it. He believes that a candidate in his position has certain obligations, and he has kept them well. He respects tradition and conventional values in public life.

McCain caved

Huckabee's evangelical flock got what they wanted, NO MITT. McCain caved to them. Palin is a lighter version of Romney. All those great conservative stands on issues, reform, and courage in leadership, Romney has a boatload more.

Romney was such an obvious choice that the only explanation could be McCain capitulated to the haters. Its a shame. Palin was second best in my opinion. But since we didn't get Romney, I'm glad we got Palin. She will be good enough.

Palin - great choice

The choice of Sarah Palin was shrewd beyond belief. Romney would have been good, but Palin excites women, conservatives, independents, religious folk, pro-lifers, reformers, etc., etc. And it's hilarious how they try to say she's not experienced enough to be Vice-President when Obama's not experienced enough to be President.

Rommey was smart... I don't

Rommey was smart... I don't think he bet against himself... I think he said no. He didn't want to be on a losing ticket

I live in MA, and I'm

I live in MA, and I'm "Wicked" glad Mitt is not on the ticket. He doesn't have the family issues we are learning about today via Alaska but on the issues that matter, well, "..what has he done lately". And for sure given this economy the Dems would have pulled out how he presided over so many people loosing their jobs while he was head of Bain. Yet another Rep looser, at least with Palin we get some 'spice' and along the way (down).

Wow.....Michelle Bachman is

Wow.....Michelle Bachman is going to benefit from gambling??? She loved to paraphrase what she thinks the Bible says....Id love to hear her take on this one.

Go away Rombots!

Man, you Rombots are still carrying on your candidates scorched earth campaign , aren't you? Yeah, right, Huckabee was a hater.......you may have forgotten that it was the Mittster who ran the attack ads against everyone and tried to spend his way to the nomination. It must really bug you guys that an underfinanced campaign like Huckabee's beat you guys out! :-p

Huckabee would have been the best pick for VP, but Palin is a good choice as well. The fact that Huckabee and Romney supporters all like her just shows how good a pick she must be!

Romney

It's pretty clear that Romneys religion, with far from mainstream Christianity, made him poison for the Republican party's chances in an election. He was never really in with a VP shout.

It is shrewd. But remember

It is shrewd. But remember it was McCain that was saying that Obama was too inexperienced and now he has a VP nominee that has literally no national experience and less than a full term as a governer. It'll be interesting to see if he continues attacking Obama's experience.

Uh, yeah. Palin may turn

Uh, yeah. Palin may turn out to be OK, but picking her doesn't mean Little John has earned my vote. His tactics and antics sicken me--hell he's just another Democrat--and I'm more than content to sit this one on the sidelines in preparation for 2012. I'm in battleground Florida and intend to use this Dole year (only worse since McCain's without Bob's conservatism, humor, good nature, and good judgement) as my chance to actually get to vote for Ronald Reagan since I was too young to have done so. Or I may feel compelled to write-in Romney actually. I might organize that effort as a measure of reciprocity against Joan and the Hickabees. And this part's the best--if it's close here in Florida, well then I might just have to vote Obama. Who's the maverick now, Senator McClaim?

Romney is flat out awesome -

See subject line.
