Beatty: If McCain picked Romney as VP, he’d win Mass.

Jeff Beatty, the Republican challenger to U.S. Sen. John Kerry (D-Boston), said Tuesday that he believes if U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) picked former Gov. Mitt Romney (R) to be his running mate, the GOP would carry Massachusetts in November for the first time since President Ronald Reagan carried it in 1980 and 1984.Jeff Beatty (R)

Responding to recent speculation that McCain may announce his choice for vice president this week while U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) is overseas, Beatty wrote a letter to McCain on Monday urging him to select Romney as his vice presidential candidate.

If McCain did pick Romney, "I believe that we'd be able to deliver Massachusetts and its 12 electoral votes to him," Beatty told PolitickerMA.com. "I think that voters in Massachusetts have had a couple years of [Gov.] Deval Patrick (D-Milton) that have failed to meet expectations."

Beatty said Romney's economic credentials would perfectly complement McCain's foreign policy and military bona fides. "We have two challenges facing our country," Beatty said, "national security and our national economy. A McCain/Romney team, with McCain's foreign policy experience and Romney's economic experience, will meet those two challenges."Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Gov. For those reasons and Romney's near constant work recently as a surrogate for McCain, the political punditry has speculated that Romney is high on McCain's vice presidential short list. Romney has repeatedly said he is not interested in the position.

"With McCain and Romney on the national ticket and Beatty versus Kerry on the Senate ticket," Beatty said, "there would be a very good possibility McCain will carry Massachusetts."

I think Beatty is practicing

I think Beatty is practicing the pure politics of making unrealistic statements if he thinks Romney could help McCain carry MA. I don't think he appreciates the depth of the ill will MA voters have for Romney for his decision to walk away from his job as governor to run for president, for the half hearted way he did his job before he resigned, and for the way he openly ridiculed and attacked MA while currying favor in conservative regions.

OTOH, I guess anything that helps people hear of him could help him in his fight against Kerry.

ignorant

you are ignorant if you believe that romney resigned as governor. he served a full term as MA governor and only after leaving office turned his attention to the presidency. not to mention, as governor he turned a $3billion deficit to a $1 billion surplus (without raising taxes), decreased unemployment, and improved education (as is seen by test scores drastically increasing). Mitt Romney was the best governor this state ever had, and while I question if Romney could deliver MA to McCain this fall, I find it insulting and ignorant to question Romney's commitment to the state.

Romney can help in mass.

there is a reason why Obams with the help from both senators and the governer still lost the state by 15 points. I don't think Romney can win it. But he sure can make it competive. And force Obams to spend time and money

No way will a McCain ticket

No way will a McCain ticket win Mass., Romney on it or not.

R U KIDDING?

Romney had a terrible reputation when he left MA to run full-time for president (at the tail end of his term) and would only marginally help McCain in MA again Obama.

McCain will win MA anyway

Senator McCain will win MA with Romney or without him anyway.
I am a voluteer for the McCain campaign and all calls I am placing in the state of Ma and NH , senator McCain is ahead.
Senator McCain is ahead 3 to 1 in the state of NH and is tied in the state of MA.
senator McCain will win at every single state Hillary Clinton won by a landslide!
Mark this post and remember me by November 5th 2008 when we make history.
Hillary supporters are all for senator Mccain so it really does NOT matter if he picks Mit Romney or Mickmouse.
McCain should concentrate on the MidWest where Obama is strong to get back votes. Mit Romney may help him in those states.
Again states Hillary won, are all at McCain's tank!
McCain will still win this election by Regan Democrats(Clinton democrats votes)

Please. There is NO way that McSame wins in MA. None at all.

Stop deluding yourself. He might win the GE, but he won't get MA's EVs.
