Former Gov. and 1988 Democratic Presidential nominee Michael Dukakis: Getty ImageFormer Gov. Michael Dukakis said Monday that John McCain's presidential campaign is using the same race-based tactics that were used against him in his 1988 presidential run.
The Brookline Democrat was referring to a recent McCain ad that claimed Democratic nominee Barack Obama received economic advice from Franklin Raines, the former CEO of the recently bailed out mortgage lender Fannie Mae. The ad features images of Raines and Obama, two African Americans, and then an image of an elderly white woman.
Asked if he considered the ad to be in the same vein as the infamous ‘Willie Horton' ad ad run by a third party group in support of George H.W. Bush in the 1988 presidential campaign, Dukakis told PolitickerMA.com: "Essentially, yes."
Bush was trailing Dukakis by a significant margin when the third party group aired the ad, which featured Willie Horton, a convicted murderer. During his time in prison, Horton was released on a weekend furlough, a program that Dukakis supported as governor, and raped a white woman.
"Despite a life sentence," the narrator says in the ad, "Horton received 10 weekend passes from prison. Horton fled, kidnapped a young couple, stabbing the man and repeatedly raping his girlfriend...Weekend prison passes: Dukakis on crime."
The ad is widely credited as painting Dukakis as soft on crime, an important issue in the election.
Referring to McCain's ad, Dukakis said "the same thing is happening again this year."
First, Dukakis said, the McCain ad is based on a lie. Raines isn't one of Obama's closest economic advisors, he said. Other members from Fannie Mae have advised Obama but the McCain camp chose to focus the ad specifically on Raines, an African American.
"Why did they pick that person from Fannie Mae?" he asked rhetorically.
Asked if the Obama campaign is sufficiently responding to the McCain ad or if it needs to do more to point out its racial undertones, Dukakis said it is very difficult to accuse a rival campaign of being racist. But, he said, political observers, like himself, should cite the similarities.
"You have to be very careful with race," he said. "For us on the outside, we can point it out."
Judge the ads for yourself:
The Willie Horton ad.
BS
utter and complete BS from an utter and complete POS
Same old Dukakis
He has said this in every election since he was creamed in his election. Go away Dukakis!
Who is Michael Dukakis and
Who is Michael Dukakis and who cares about his opinion? He is irrelelvant.
Dukakis continues to be a
Dukakis continues to be a complete STOOGE and an ABSOLUTE LOSER !!!
Both ads are true
Both ads are true. But how Docockus gets any connection is beyond me. Go back to sleep Michael, you're in over your head as always.
Racist no matter what...
So if we put Barack in a commercial with a black guy it's racist... if there's a white woman in it that's racist too! So if we put Barry in an ad with all black people that would be racist... and if we put him in an ad with all white people that's racist.
You know what's racist? It's 94% of blacks voting for the black guy in the primaries. Two Democrats were running and the black guy was getting up to 96% of the black vote in some areas.
You know what's racist? A presidential candidate belonging to a church for 22 years based on Black Liberation Theology that clearly puts blacks before everyone else! A church that is not only based on Marxist principles as if this weren't bad enough it's based on Racist Marxist principles and this guy wants to be my president?
If John McCain belonged to a racist bigoted hatin whitey hatin America church like Barack obama how many blacks would be voting for him!
Any clear thinking white person that votes for this empty suit fool Barack Obama needs to get their head examined!
Dukakis
1) Dukakis is a loser. Always has been. Always will be. Why should anyone pay the slightest bit of attention to him now? He certainly sounds bitter and has an axe to grind.
2) Raines and Obama are linked. Check out the contributions to Obama from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.
3) The Obama campaign and liberals have always been the ones to play race and are the real races.
Where did they find this fossil?
Perhaps we should make Franklin Raines white-faced? Or maybe they should check out the same ad with the other Fannie Mae crook, Jim Johnson (who is white).
Do these reporters ask any questions or do any homework at all?
I wonder why the article, or
I wonder why the article, or Dukakis for that matter, didn’t mention that McCain has another commercial featuring a white guy from Fannie Mae. That’s right! There are two commercials. No one is talking about the second one though. I wonder why?
Oh yeah, never mind.
The obama camp is already positioning itself where if he loses its because of his race and not where he stands on the issues. I wonder what city will burn first if he loses.

Give me a Break!
This sounds like John Stossel should do a "Give me a break" segment on this. The ad is just the typical political ad that places a spin to detract and place doubt.
Both Obama and McCain are placing ads like this. Check out http://www.factcheck.org/ and you will see that both are misleading or rather spinning the facts.
No racial undertones....
I am South East Asian, and I did not see racial undertones as the dominant message. What I heard was bad judgment or bad policy, by Obama in the first ad., and Dukakis in the second.
The economy and the death penalty are have have been key issues important to voters. With the recent disclosure that Obama has received over $125,000 in lobbying $$ from the failed mortgage companies, (the 2nd highest received by any congressman), the message of the ad. resonates with voters...

Dukakis's phony complaint about "Willie Horton"
First of all, if you look at the beginning of the "Willie Horton ad" that is attributed in the article to George H.W. Bush, you'll see that it ISN'T from the Bush campaign at all: It was prepared and run by an independent advocacy group, the "National Security PAC."
The Bush campaign did NOT run ads showing photos of William Horton and indicating his race.
Neither did my article in the July 1988 Reader's Digest, "Getting Away With Murder" -- which chronicled the history of Dukakis's policy of granting weekend prison furloughs -- then sentence commutations -- to first-degree murderers who had been sentenced to life without parole. The substance of the charges in the TV ad are not only true; they considerably understate what Dukakis was doing.
Second, his complaint about McCain's TV ad on Franklin Raines is a distortion. Raines was not singled out because of his race, but because of his corruption. At the same time, McCain also released an ad about another Fannie Mae CEO, Jim Johnson, who also was a big-time Obama fundraiser. Johnson's photo was also shown, and he is white.
Dukakis is still smarting about losing the election after all these years, convincing himself that he lost due to dirty politics. In truth, voters rejected him largely for his record on crime, which was a disaster -- and which even caused a rebellion within his own Democrat-dominated state legislature.

McCain did another
McCain did another commercial with a white executive from Fannie/Freddie Mae. How do they explain that?
That tactics of the Democrats have truly become disgusting. Obama's entire campaign is based on a lie. I'm no huge fan of McCain, but I might vote for him because enough is enough.
Demokratic Party Racism Rears It's Head!
I had always thought the Willie Horton ads were about how Dukakis was allowing convicted murderers, currently serving time, out on furloughs.
Good Liberal that he was known to be, and of course, sympathetic to to convict, rather than the victim!
BTW, Willie Horton KILLED while out on one of those Dukakis furloughs. Dukakis never apologized for that one!
I also never noticed that Horton was black, until that great race baiter of the Demokratic Party, Jesse Jackson, pointed it out.
Shame on me! When I viewed the ad, I had thought it was about Dukakis' lenient penal policies!!!

BHO: Our first Marxist racist candidate.

He joins this church with these beliefs and he wants to be my president? You've got to be kidding.

Dukakis
The willie horton ad was not based on race. It was based on Dukakis and his soft position on crime.
Liberals lie like there is no tomorrow. Mention that someone is black or show a picture of a black person and they begin to yell racism. where none exists.
You can't criticize Obama at all without bringing on the liberal cheerleaders for racism.
Ha Ha Ha HA
I had pick myself off the floor. Poor Dukakis. It was AL GORE that FIRST brought up Willie Horton!
**SIGH** Of course Liberals fail to see that 95% of blacks voting for Obama is NOT racism, but if 55% of white vote for McCain, then it is racism...
I am the only one
who doesn't agree with a single one of you mutherfuckers. what in the hell are YOU all SO MAD about? I am guilty of the same thing indeed, but WHy do you HATE OBAMA SO MUCH?
you all sound as immature as the idiots who mangle youtube comments into things having nothing to do with the video (as in a James Brown video leading to a discussion about the situation in the middleast.)
get over your hate.
I don't know why anyone would say a single thing any one of you has said.
racism shmacism. it doesn't matter.
why do you "acsuse" us of having a "liberal bias" as IF that is somehow NOT the good sensible thing to be??????
atheism, science, reason, openness, free thinking and acceptance of differences are the way now, in this postmodern place.
not "preserving the status quo" because you are a coward and have given in to attachment and greed (like anakin)
so why don't I undermine everything I just said and in anger and hypocrisy say "why don't you all go fuck yourselves?"
I will. Why don't you all go fuck yourselves.
now
fuck off.
Possibly a racist candidate, definitely a racist author
Wow, obviously "Moses" is racist. I can't believe people still think that way this long after the Civil War. Should a "clear thinking white person" really base thier vote on race and religion like you suggest, or maybe they should logically decide which canditate is best based on their opinions and issues. I don't know what you are thinking, but obviously people like you are the problem with this election.
